Myeong-dong is the central business district of Seoul. It is a district located south of the Han River and it includes a triangle of "western" areas, from the districts of Yangjae in the west to Yeouido in the east and Gangnam in the north which is the "east" of the district. The district was established in 1794 during the Joseon Dynasty and was originally called "Kyung-dong". It became known as Myeong-dong in 1884. The name of the district came from a market for silk products located there which was called "Myeong-dan" or "Sweet Port", but the name was changed to Myeong-dong in 1884. It was also sometimes called "Han-dong", which means "Han River side market".
