Irving Howe is an author who has also served as a lecturer and social activist. He is one of the most prominent and influential political and social thinkers and writers of the 20th century. Irving Howe was born on July 13, 1923 in Brooklyn, New York, United States. He attended the University of Wisconsin where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1945. He also enrolled in the graduate school of Columbia University and received his Master’s degree in 1947. After graduation he went on to join the staff of the journal Dissent. In 1948 he had his first book published entitled The Utopian Tradition: A Study in the History of Ideas. This book was a very controversial and controversial book about Communism and how it had spread across the world and had infiltrated into our political and social system. Irving Howe has written 25 books and over 100 articles and essays. He has been a professor at several universities including the New School for Social Research and Brandeis University.
In 1937 he married Ruth Gruber with whom he had three children, Cynthia, Joshua and Samuel. In 1989 he married Miriam Brodie.
Irving Howe was a Jewish American literary and social critic, founding editor of Dissent magazine, and a prominent figure of the Democratic Socialists of America. He received the National Book Award for his widely influential work, World of Our Fathers (1976), which presents a historical, cultural, and social interpretation of the migration of East European Jews to the United States.
