Léopold Sédar Senghor was a Senegalese poet, novelist, and politician. He is considered one of the most important African writers of the 20th century. He is most famous for his long epic poem "A Dying Africa" that mourned for his country's past glory. He is also known for his novel "Mother of the World", an autobiographical account of an African woman's life in France.
He was born in Senegal in 1883, but he grew up in the small village of Ndianke Kara in French Sudan, where his father taught him various African languages. He attended school in Dakar and Saint-Louis, Senegal, where he was an excellent student. Senghor graduated from the Lycée Faidherbe in 1904 with a diploma in French language and literature. He then studied law at the University of Dakar.
He then became a teacher at the Lycée Faidherbe. In 1913 he became editor of the newspaper "Le Soleil" in Dakar, which published poems by young Senghor.
Léopold Sédar Senghor (9 October 1906 – 20 December 2001) was a Senegalese poet, politician, and cultural theorist who for two decades served as the first president of Senegal (1960–80). Ideologically an African socialist, he was associated with the Négritude movement. He was the founder of the Senegalese Democratic Bloc party.
