    Haig attended West Point on a full scholarship in the midst of the Vietnam War, and graduated in June 1970. He was commissioned as an infantry officer, and received his first combat assignment in May 1971, when he deployed to South Korea.

    Haig was promoted to second lieutenant in 1972 while serving in Korea, and in January 1973 he left the army for a year of graduate school at Tufts University.

    He returned to active duty in October 1974, but this time he was assigned to the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. where he worked on the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT) with the Soviet Union.
