    Le Guin was born on 21st January 1929 in Berkeley, California. Her parents were Frederick and Annette Kroeber Le Guin. Le Guin’s father was a botanist and explorer, while her mother was a teacher and anthropologist.

    Le Guin graduated from the University of California at Berkeley with a Bachelor of Arts degree in anthropology. She also pursued a Master of Arts degree in English literature at the University of California at Santa Cruz.

    During the mid-1950s, Le Guin began writing science fiction novels. Her first novel The Left Hand of Darkness (1969) was nominated for the Hugo and Nebula awards and won the John W. Campbell Memorial Award. Her 1972 novel The Lathe of Heaven won both the Hugo and Nebula awards for best novel.

    Ursula Kroeber Le Guin (/ˈkroʊbər lə ˈɡwɪn/;[1] October 21, 1929 – January 22, 2018) was an American novelist. She worked mainly in the genres of fantasy and science fiction, and authored children's books, short stories, poetry, and essays. Her writing was first published in the 1960s and often depicted futuristic or imaginary alternative worlds in politics, the natural environment, gender, religion, sexuality, and ethnography. In 2016, The New York Times described her as "America's greatest living science fiction writer",[2] although she said that she would prefer to be known as an "American novelist".[3]
