Hüseyin Menekşe Hatun was born in the village of İvrindi near Adana, on 4th April 1930. He was a son of a farmer and had 13 siblings. His father died when he was 18 and his mother when he was 19, leaving him with the responsibility for the family. He found it difficult to support his family and went to Istanbul in search of work.
In 1955 he married his first wife, Şerife, who was from another village. They had two children, Erkan and Şafak, who are both now living in Istanbul. They divorced in 1968.
In 1968 he married his second wife, Nevin, who is also from İvrindi. They have no children together.
Hüseyin Menekşe was one of the founding members of the Adana branch of the Socialist Party. In the 1970s he became close to the group around Ali Rıza Demirci, Adana’s mayor, who was also a member of the Socialist Party.
