In the comics, Aang is a child from a very poor family he is the only kid in the village his father is a fisherman. During a boat trip Aang's father is thrown overboard and Aang is saved by the boat owner. He is taken in and works for the boat owner earning money to send to his father. The boat owner takes Aang to a rich, wealthy city in which he is taken in by an old man who teaches Aang how to be a waterbender. Aang becomes a waterbender and uses his newly learned abilities to make a living for himself and his family.
As an adult, Aang has lived in the city for nine years. One day while out on the pier, Aang sees the Avatar Cycle pass by and lands on the dock. He follows the Avatar Cycle back to the city where he is taken in by Katara and Sokka who are on their way to the North Pole. He takes their job to find Zuko back to the city where he has taken over the position of Firelord.
