The word “ego-system” is a very complex construct and it is not easy to understand what is meant by it. Therefore, it is difficult to give a precise description of the properties of such a system. There is a more or less consistent description of the ego-system in psychotherapy literature which is based on the structure of the archetypal collective unconscious. Archetypal complexes are complexes which are typical for one specific human type and which can be studied and analyzed using Jungian and/or Object Relations techniques. The ego-system is a complex that belongs to the anima and animus and belongs to the archetype of the Self.
Kleinfeld explains that the ego-system is the “Collective Unconscious of the Ego” and is “composed of complexes which belong to the Jungian archetype of the Self.” According to this description, the ego-system refers to a part of the collective unconscious of an individual. The collective unconscious is the result of genetic programming and it does not belong to a specific human type.
