Mamoru Oshii (voiced by Chiaki Kuriyama) is an IJN NCO who was convicted of treason in a mysterious incident. The memories of the incident are a jumbled mess, but he can still remember the faces of the soldiers who died. He is then recruited by an officer named Lieutenant Colonel Nicholai to join the V.I.M.E.N.T. organization, an elite military unit that was formed to deal with paranormal phenomena. His first mission is to investigate the disappearance of a batch of experimental virtual reality projectors, which were developed by an unnamed organization as a means of enhanced interrogation.
