My father, was born in Germany and moved to Canada when he was 5 years old. He has told me that his name was not like the name I use for my father today, but it was easier for him to write the first name down since he could read and write in both languages. He grew up in a small town in New Brunswick that was not far from the border of Maine. His father ran a general store and my grandfather was a carpenter. My grandfather had a small farm where they raised chickens and they would sell the eggs and some of the chickens.
When my grandfather died it was my father that took over the farm and the general store. He saved money and bought a piece of land outside of town where he built a house and started a general store that had all the things that his father did not have time to do.
