Then he recalls a time when his father was very ill and he tried to help out by buying him a new pair of shoes. He said that he felt really bad about it, and he assumed that he wasn't supposed to give his father gifts like that.
So he went and got a book and wrote a letter to his father in it, and he put it in his father's shoe. And then, while he was getting ready to go out and put the shoe on his father, he thought about how he should be doing something to help him, like doing laundry or doing dishes or something like that. He felt like there was nothing that he could do for his father, and he felt really bad about himself, and he cried.
He said that that took place in the spring, and then he went to the grocery store and got a bunch of stuff and brought it home and put it inside his closet so his mother wouldn't see it and get mad at him.
