Fitzgerald was born in Evanston, Illinois, on March 24, 1922. Her grandfather was a traveling salesman and her father a part-time musician. She attended Evanston Township High School and then Northwestern University, where she majored in English. She graduated in 1945, and received a master's degree from the University of Chicago in 1950.
Before going to work as a journalist, Fitzgerald was a librarian. She worked as a producer and a reporter for the "Chicago Daily News" from 1945 until 1952. Then she took a job as a television critic for "The New York Herald Tribune" from 1952 until 1955. In 1955, she joined the staff of "Harper's Bazaar", as a contributing editor. In 1959, she became a freelance writer and eventually became the magazine's editor.
In April 1979, Fitzgerald retired from "Harper's Bazaar". She moved to New York City, where she lived until her death in 1998.
