Age of Civilizations personality type is ENTP, as far as I can tell. My personality type is ENTP and I'm not sure if that would fit what you're describing, but it sounds plausible. I've talked to other ENTPs and heard this story from them as well. I think it's possible that what you first thought was a personality type and later realized was a personality trait and no longer fit the description of that type. If this is the case, then I think it could be why you keep hearing this story from others, because you're thinking of the personality type, not the personality trait.
What I'm thinking is that paraphrasing the story to fit an established personality type (especially one you don't personally fit) might make the story sound more convincing, and thus more likely. It's like when people say horror stories and say, "This happened to me! This really happened to me!" and they seem like they're telling the truth. People don't like to think their own experiences and stories are being misused for making a point.
ENFPs can be just as over-the-top as any other type, especially if they have a dominant function. In fact, they can be even more extreme.
