How the data was acquired
We gathered the data for this study by directly surveying approximately 380,000 registered players of League of Legends. Players who were outside of the United States were excluded.
The participants were selected by means of probability sampling; specifically, we sampled randomly from all eligible players who were currently playing League of Legends. The sample size for each player was proportionate to the number of players in their region. This study was conducted at Riot Games' headquarters in Los Angeles, California.
The survey was conducted using Amazon's Mechanical Turk, an online platform for conducting labor-intensive surveys. The surveys were administered by Riot employees. A small number of these surveys were conducted by students in a class taught by Martin Kocher at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. We obtained institutional review board approval for this study with an exemption to anonymize individual responses.
League of Legends, commonly referred to as League, is a 2009 multiplayer online battle arena video game developed and published by Riot Games. Inspired by Defense of the Ancients, a custom map for Warcraft III, Riot's founders sought to develop a stand-alone game in the same genre. Since its release in October 2009, the game has been free-to-play and is monetized through purchasable character customization. The game is available for Microsoft Windows and macOS. In the game, two teams of five players battle in player versus player combat, each team occupying and defending their half of the map. Each of the ten players controls a character, known as a "champion", with unique abilities and differing styles of play. During a match, champions become more powerful by collecting experience points, earning gold, and purchasing items to defeat the opposing team.
