In the video game series Silent Hill, the main character is James Sunderland. He is a down to earth, soft-spoken man who comes to Silent Hill, which he considers a beautiful town with friendly people, to search for his wife Mary.
James is a caring person who is willing to do anything to help the townspeople. He is a pacifist, who is against violence and even acts as a mediator when other people get violent or aggressive towards each other.
James's life takes a tragic turn when he discovers his wife's body in their flooded apartment. James then seeks answers about his wife and the town in which she lived. He follows clues, hears rumors and learns more about the town and its residents.
James also discovers that he is a cult leader within the town, who has been murdered and replaced by an impostor. The people in the town are under his influence and are very accepting of him, because of his peaceful ways. James also learns that his wife is not dead and that she is secretly ruling the town as its queen.
