Despite the name, Skullgirls is not a fighting game. It's a 2D fighting game with a roster of cute characters, an anime story, and a mechanic of breaking the boundaries of the 2D plane to create new characters on the fly.

Skullgirls is probably the most interesting fighting game of the last couple of years. It's easily approachable for completely new players, but it has more depth than any fighting game I can think of.
And it has more depth than your average anime story, too. The main plot is about trying to find out what happened to an ancient civilization on a set of islands. But there are also side plots for each character, and the plot makes sense in the context of each character's story. It's very well-done.

If you're looking for a fighting game that has near-perfect balance, really great animations, and lots of replayability, Skullgirls is definitely worth playing. I gave it a 9/10 in my review.
Released in the year 2012 during April, becoming more and more popular over the years. Skullgirls is a 2-d fighting game made by Alex Ahad (Mostly on design) and Mike Zaimont (Ex programmer due to controversies). It is known for its fluent animation and fast paced gameplay filled with fairly balanced characters. Although it has been described as "dormant" for the past 6-7 years, Skullgirls has awoken once again thanks to the help of remaining companies and the new group named the Future club.
