Fazio's first job as a journalist was as a reporter for the Milan-based daily Corriere della Sera. He succeeded his father as presenter of the TV programme L'Ora della Verità—an Italian adaptation of a classic British television quiz show, Truth or Consequences, first presented by Arthur Askey and later by Bill Cullen—on the Italian state broadcaster Rai 3.
In the 1970s, Fazio began to work at the small private television station Italia 1, where he worked as a writer and producer until the early 1980s. In the early 1980s, he worked as a journalist for the daily newspaper Corriere della Sera. He moved to RAI 3 in 1982, where he initially worked as a commentator and interviewer for various shows on RAI 3. In 1985, he was assigned to present a round-table show called Le domande a Ferdinando Cecchi Gori, aired on Sunday evenings. In 1986, he became the presenter of the now-defunct nightly news programme Notizie, which was later renamed Il Segreto (The Secret).
