Garewal was born in Fairhaven, Massachusetts to Brajesh Garewal, an entomologist, and Anju Garewal. She attended the University of Massachusetts Amherst where she graduated magna cum laude with a B.A. in English in 2004. While there, she worked as an assistant features editor for the Daily Collegian in 2003–2004. She went on to graduate school at Columbia University in New York City in 2004, receiving her master's degree in journalism in 2005. While there, she taught in the MFA program in creative writing.
