On Saturday, Matsuura was visiting the Woodside home of his mother, who is battling cancer. He was at home when he got the phone call that his mother was dead.
A few hours later, he attended a memorial service for her at a local church and came to the Valley to visit his family and friends.
He flew to the Valley on Monday and joined a panel of speakers at a conference for entrepreneurs and innovators called Startup Summit at Stanford University.
Matsuura’s career has been marked by relentless innovation, and he says he doesn’t know how he could possibly move forward without his mother.
“I think this is the most important thing I do,” he said, without hesitation. “What I do is not about me. It’s to make the world better.”
