Hortense de Beauharnais met Thomas Kent in New York and they were married on 8 March 1866. Viola was born on 12 March 1867. Thomas Kent was a banker who had made a fortune in the lumber business. He served as collector of the Port of New York during the Civil War.
The couple had three children, Jean, Hortense and Louis-Philippe. They lived in a mansion on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. The family was very active in social affairs and entertained many famous people, including President Theodore Roosevelt.
