"I don't think I'm a very emotive person," he tells me, "but if they are angry, angry is angry. If they are happy, I'll be happy. That's just how I am."
He's not entirely sure how the characters came to be, but he believes there was a natural blending of his own situation and the ideas he had for the story.
"It's hard to say, because I wasn't thinking about anything," he says. "I'm not sure that I was conscious of the characters because I was just typing. I didn't know that I was creating a story because I was just exploring and enjoying my own mind, and the characters just sort of came out of me while I was typing."
Though there are elements of Hikawa's life in the story, he stresses that it's not autobiographical.
"It's like an autobiography," he says. "Some of the situations are based on things that happened in my life, but there's no real truth in it.
