My parents were born in Germany. My dad was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1942. He was stationed in Germany for two years. He married my mother in 1953, and they built a new life for themselves in Pittsburgh. My dad came home on furlough during the 1960s, when he spent time working in the mines near Binghamton, New York. I think it’s because of his experiences in Germany that he became a strong supporter of the United States and its military.
My mom was very quiet, very reserved.
