He is a hobbit, a member of a race of diminutive people from the Shire, who lives in the Westfarthing of the Old Forest. He is a very talented gardener and a loving friend to his nephews and niece, Frodo and Samwise Gamgee. In the novel, Bilbo sets out to take a large amount of treasure from his home, which includes a magic ring. However, Gandalf tells him to keep it safe until Frodo can claim it. Bilbo does so, but falls prey to Smaug the Dragon. The last thing he did before dying was write a final letter to Frodo.
Argus Filch was a Squib and the caretaker of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry since around 1973. Filch usually wandered around the school corridors with his cat Mrs Norris, trying to catch students breaking the school rules and complaining about Peeves the Poltergeist.
