Lazarus is a character from the Christian New Testament narrative. He is one of two sons of the patriarch Abraham. In the New Testament, he washes and prepares Jesus for burial after his death. He later appears to Mary and Martha in a vision and tells them that he has been sent to help them understand the events of Jesus' death and resurrection. Mary then tells Jesus about this. Lazarus dies four days later, with Mary and Martha mourning his death. His story is depicted in the Gospel of John.
