This is why he is so protective of Ender, because he cares about the well-being of his friend. He understands how to handle bullies, and can handle them without making them too angry. To Ender, Valentine is similar to a big brother. He is always there to show his care for Ender, and will do anything he can to help Ender in any way he can. Valentine also appears to be very intelligent, having received a doctorate in genetics from Stanford University.
