Tyler spoke at last year's Extra Life charity event, and I think that's when I first started hearing about it. It was the day after Thanksgiving, and he was talking about what it's like to be part of Extra Life. The video was extremely compelling, it made me want to donate money to the cause to help sick kids play video games (my previous volunteering for Extra Life had been to help with their IndieGoGo fund).
I don't remember much about the conversation after that, but I think it was related to how Tyler got involved in #GamerGate. I think it happened in 2015, but I could be wrong about the year.
I'd heard about the whole thing before that, but I'd mostly just watched the news reports when they happened, and thought that they were just a bunch of stupid people.
Tyler was completely different than anything I'd ever seen in the news reports. He didn't seem to be angry or hateful at all. He was so calm and so friendly, and so normal.
