Ruruka is first seen when the group of travelers find her sobbing in a small shed. She says she wants to go home, but Hinta refuses to take her back until she can learn how to pay her way. Ruruka says she doesn't have any money, but she does have ten eris, which she extends to the group. The group agrees to teach Ruruka how to cook, and eventually they become good friends.
Later one stormy night, Ruruka sleeps in the same tent as the group. She is woken up by a noise outside and goes to investigate. Hinta tells Ruruka that the sound was a rock falling from the mountain. Ruruka notices that it was raining, and a few moments later, a lit torch falls from the sky and lands in front of her. Ruruka realizes that it's a sign from Nataan, the goddess of fire, and from then on she makes sure to have a lit torch with her at all times.
