“I think it’s a type that has very little requirements,” he said. “It’s just like, ‘Hey, I’m going to be an artist, and this is what I’m going to do.’ ”
He would spend the early days of his art career working for the government, which he found boring and too bureaucratic.
“But then I realized I could go off and create my own projects and have my own system and make my own rules,” he said.
He would become a drawing teacher and eventually open his own art school in Seoul.
Lee retired a few years ago to focus on personal projects, but still works as an art instructor in Korea.
He has also been known to open his home to anyone who might need some help in getting a little self-expression going.
“I think I have a soft spot for people who are struggling with their own selves,” he said. “I think it’s more common than people think.”
For Lee, his art is his life.
