What do you find most challenging about your role as a therapist helping people through their depression?
It’s hard to see the person as more than just a “person”. It’s hard to see them as a fragile human being who is suffering. Instead, they are viewed as a “troubled person” who needs to be fixed or who needs to be changed. I think that this is one of the biggest challenges that I face in my work. Many of my clients are able to see this, but often they feel helpless, confused, and alone.
Depression is not something that someone can come in and fix. I think it is something that requires time, patience, and understanding. The best thing that I can do for my clients is to learn about their depression, listen to them, understand what they are going through, and help them move towards a healthier place.
Do you have any tips for people looking to improve their coping skills with depression?
For me, the most important thing is to be kind.
