The Catcher in the Rye by J. D. Salinger (1951)
...in case you were wondering, I was born in 1951. I'm not kidding.
The events of the book take place in the 1940s, when I was in elementary school. I was in fifth grade when this book came out in 1951, but the events in the book (and the character Holden Caulfield) took place in the 1930s. The book has been banned in some states because of the frank sexual language, but it's still in print in many libraries. I think it's one of the most important books written about the adolescence of teenagers. It presents a unique view of an unique character who is unique in many ways. I believe that Holden Caulfield is the literary representation of the INFP personality type.
The novel is not about how many times someone smokes Marlboros a day, but what it does to their relationships with others and their internal feelings about themselves. Holden is an INFP who thinks that everyone is full of shit and that they don't know what they're talking about.
