Murr's self-imposed exile ended this weekend, when he was called up by the Buffalo Sabres and ended his nine-year stint in the American Hockey League.
"That was a big decision," Murr said. "I've never been told I couldn't play by anybody. I've just always thought I could play pro hockey longer than I have."
Murr, 30, had been in the AHL for the previous nine years, including the last five with the Portland Pirates. He had a combined 568 games of experience with the Pirates and Rochester Americans.
"It's just more fun to be up here in the NHL," Murr said. "You're getting seen a lot more. And even though we're not playing that much, we're still playing enough to be happy about."
Murr was recalled from Portland on Saturday, when the Sabres had an empty roster.
