The story follows the life of people living in the town of Chortkov, Belarus, during the second world war. The Germans are invading and bringing with them these horrible new weapons. They are also trying to take over the local synagogue.
The main character, young Yentl Bielski, is a Jewish girl who has been hiding in the attic many of her childhood years, she was never allowed to go outside of the house. She is just 12 which makes her too young to be forced into marriage.
Along with her uncle she decides to escape over the mountains to freedom. They are helped by some local villagers and some Ukrainian partisans, but they are caught by the Germans and taken on a death march to Treblinka extermination camp.
