In Greek Mythology, Persephone is known as the daughter of Zeus and Demeter, goddess of the harvest. She was the infant daughter who was abducted by Hades, the god of the underworld.
She wasn't allowed to interact with the other gods because she could not be seen, so she had to spend her time in the Underworld. She was also known as the Maiden because she was pure and unblemished by age or death, and because she was associated with springtime.
When Hades kidnapped her, he promised to return her to her mother if she stopped growing flowers. While she was in the Underworld, she was woken up by the flowers that grew around her because she had eaten some pomegranates that had fallen into the Underworld.
Returning to the surface, she was reunited with her mother Demeter, but her brother Hades became jealous of her because he could not be seen with her. He set out to make her mortal so that he could marry her.
