“We’ve created a way to study people like human computers,” said lead study author John D.E. Gabrieli, a professor of psychology and director of the McGovern Institute for Brain Research at M.I.T.
The new study, published in the journal Neuron, is part of an ongoing effort by Gabrieli and his team to understand the brain mechanisms underlying consciousness. To do so, the investigators are using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), which allows them to examine the brain while people perform tasks that are difficult to test with other methods. The study of consciousness has been almost entirely limited to simple tasks that can be easily tested in the laboratory.
One of the reasons fMRI studies of consciousness are limited is that there is no way to know how much of an individual’s brain activity is caused by their thoughts or emotions, or how much is caused by external stimuli.
“The only way to pull apart the contribution of your mind and your senses is to study someone who is completely passive,” Gabrieli said.
