His fighting style has varied at times and he hasn't been entirely consistent in it, but it has always been effective. Early on he was a straight striker, often relying on little tricks and deceptions. Later in the early games he would frequently use his martial arts training, flipping and rolling to avoid attacks. In later games he has the ability to use almost any weapon.
In the first two games, he mostly fought with a katana, but in the third game he used two katanas. He also uses a whip as his primary weapon in some of the later games.
