Arthropleura is the only genus in the family Arthropleuridae. They are parasitic worms found in freshwater fish and people. The life cycle of the Arthropleura is as follows:

The eggs of the Arthropleura are passed out of the fish and deposited on the underside of a leaf. The eggs hatch into free-living larvae called a paratype. The paratypes then burrow into a leaf and remain there until they mature into a trophozoon. The trophozoon then searches for a fish and attaches itself to the intestinal wall. If the fish is eaten by a human or other host, the trophozoon will be passed out of the host and settle on the mucous membrane of the mouth. The trophozoon will then bore through the mucous membrane and find a vein and then begin to grow. The growth of the trophozoon will then kill the human or other host and can grow to lengths of up to 3 metres.
