The creation of this character was inspired by his real-life friend, the writer John J. O'Connor (then known as "John O'Connor"), who was also named Piers Anthony. The two friends collaborated on a series of science fiction novels featuring Piers Anthony's character, "Judas Iscariot". The first book in the series, "The Bloody Crown of Zorro", was published in 1976.
The character of "Judas Iscariot" was originally used in the fantasy role-playing game "Dungeons & Dragons" ("D&D") to represent the betrayer of Jesus in the Biblical story of the Last Supper. Anthony's friend John O'Connor created the conceptual archetype for this character, based on the Christian concept of Judas Iscariot.
