André Pichot, born September 15, 1950 [1], is a CNRS researcher in epistemology and history of science.
He is best known for his highly critical writings on the history of biology, including Darwinism, genetics, and molecular biology, especially the influence that modern biology has had on ideologies promoting eugenics and racism. His analysis of the history of the ideas that led to modern biology is guided by a critique of the living being as a machine. According to him, modern biology has reached an impasse by claiming to be mechanistic when in fact it should be more accurately described as machinist, since it brings all biological explanations back to the machine. This criticism is underpinned by an original conception of life, set out in his Elements for a Theory of Biology (1968).
