    Ferguson’s childhood was not easy. He was born in 1936 in Glasgow, Scotland. His father was an alcoholic who would often beat his mother. When he was young, he had to take care of his mother, who suffered from chronic depression. When he was six, he came home one day to find his parents dead in their bed. The doctors said they were poisoned by the father. According to his own account, this event caused him to lose his faith in God.

    When he was 10 years old, he moved to London with his mother and younger brother. His mother remarried but her second husband was also an alcoholic.

    Ferguson earned his living as a freelance writer for several newspapers including the Daily Telegraph and the Evening Standard.

    Niall Campbell Ferguson (/ˈniːl/; born 18 April 1964) is a Scottish historian who works as a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution. Previously, he was a professor at Harvard University and New York University, was also a senior research fellow at Jesus College, Oxford, and a visiting professor at the New College of the Humanities. Ferguson writes and speaks about international history, economic and financial history and British and American imperialism. He is known for his contrarian views and his defence of the British empire. He once ironically called himself "a fully paid-up member of the neo-imperialist gang" following the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Ferguson has been a contributing editor for Bloomberg Television and a columnist for Newsweek.
