In the 1920s and 1930s, the "Subway Vigilante" was an urban legend who roamed the subways of New York City in order to protect the public from the rampant crime that was present at the time. The vigilante was a mysterious individual who would appear with a gun and a black mask, and would shoot a criminal on sight. The identity of the "Subway Vigilante" was never uncovered, and no one was ever arrested for the crimes committed by the vigilante.
In 1987, after a series of robberies on the New York Subway carried out by a man named Arthur Shaw, who committed his crimes under the name of "Shaw", a series of attacks were carried out by a vigilante by the name of "Bernard Goetz". Goetz had a history of law-breaking and violence, which he used to justify his actions.
Goetz shot and killed six people, including a teenager who he had been trying to rob. He was arrested on December 22, but not tried until 1988, when he was acquitted by a New York City jury.
