Ramirez was born in Delano, California on November 7, 1960. He was named by his mother, Lillian Ramirez.
Ramirez was brought up in a violent household. His stepfather would beat his mother, and his father would beat him. When he was eight years old, he was sexually abused by a family friend, who threatened him with a knife if he told anyone about it. This led to Ramirez being in therapy for the rest of his life. He also claimed that his stepfather would frequently threaten him with physical abuse when they were in public.
Ramirez graduated from high school at age 14 with a GED. He dropped out of college at age 18 after being rejected for financial aid by the University of California, Berkeley, because he had no high school diploma or credit.
Ramirez's goal was to become a writer, but after he failed to get an agent, he decided to become an attorney. Ramirez studied law at Golden Gate University in San Francisco, where he was exposed to the darker aspects of the law.
