Hanssen’s career was in espionage. He was an agent for the KGB in the US who spied for the Soviet Union and Russia throughout the Cold War. He was recruited in 1979 and remained in their service until his arrest in June 2001. He also worked at the same time for the FBI, and was a double agent who betrayed his country and countrymen for money and friendship with his Russian handlers.
