The movie was based on a book from author William Diehl. He was nicknamed "the fox" for his cunning and ability to get out of trouble and avoid capture.

    Buscetta was also known as an informant and for his willingness to testify against other mob members. He was the first mobster to turn against the Mafia and help investigators in an effort to dismantle the Mafia, which led to the arrest and imprisonment of his fellow mobsters. He was the leader of the Sicilian Mafia in Palermo and also in his home town Messina. He got the nickname "the fox" for his ability to get out of trouble and avoid capture. He was known for being a member of the Mafia and a criminal. He became a very rich man by engaging in crime and drug trafficking, and he became extremely powerful in the Mafia and also in Sicily.

    Tommaso Buscetta (13 July 1928 – 2 April 2000) was an Italian mobster, a member of the Sicilian Mafia, who became one of the first of its members to turn informant (pentito) after Leonardo Vitale, and explain the inner workings of the organisation. Buscetta participated in criminal activity in Italy, the United States and Brazil before being extradited to Italy, where he provided important testimony at the Maxi Trial, the largest anti-Mafia trial in history. After the murder of the judges Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino, Buscetta gave further testimony to the Antimafia Commission linking Italian politicians to the Mafia. Buscetta entered the Witness Protection Program in the United States, where he remained until his death in 2000.
