As a child, Iyer studied painting and art history at the Karnataka Government College of Art in Bangalore. As an undergraduate student, he obtained a degree in mechanical engineering from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bangalore.
He later obtained a PhD degree from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (IITD) in 1993. His doctoral thesis was in fluid dynamics and applied to the design of supersonic re-entry vehicles for future space programs.
Iyer joined ISRO in 1991 as an aerospace engineer.
