Jaya (Sanskrit: जय, IAST: Jaya), the eleventh avatar of Vishnu (incarnation), was born to Rohini and Narada. The story of Jaya’s birth is told in the Skanda Purana (6.61-70), while another version is found in the Brahmanda Purana (3. 1.25–26). According to the Skanda Purana, when Rohini was pregnant, she took no food or water. Rohini’s condition did not improve until Narada recited the Vedic hymns. To ensure that Rohini did not go into premature labour, Narada placed a golden ball between her thighs.
Once the baby was born, Narada placed it in a cradle made of gold and jewels and presented it to a brahmin named Agastya.
