Carmichael says that his first interest in typology was a fascination with Native American tribes in the early 1990s. “Like the Iroquois, who started the Five Nations,” he says. “I liked the idea of a tribe with a language and a code of ethics that was based on the way we think, not just on the way we look.”
But while he was fascinated by Native American tribes, Carmichael says that his interest in typology did not become intense until he moved to New York City in 2002. “I became so interested in how we all act,” he says. “The idea that we are all so different and yet we all express ourselves so similarly. It is so fascinating to me.”
