Sarek personality type is ISTJ, but I'm not very good at explaining it, so it's easier to just say "Sarek is a judger". This is the type of character who makes decisions based on what's logical and practical, and it's this aspect that makes him such a great leader. He does not believe in coincidence; he believes that everything is interconnected and that there is a reason and a purpose to everything. He attempts to find patterns and make predictions based on those patterns and those predictions. But this is where the character gets troublesome; he is a bit of a control freak, and he will sometimes make decisions based on how he'd like things to turn out rather than what's actually best for the group or the universe.
Sarek is also, as you'll see if you watch the movie, a very good judge of character. He can spot a flaw in someone's character with amazing ease, which is useful in the position he holds. But he also judges people based on their actions, which can cause problems. For example, in the movie he seems to have a blind spot for Spock's emotional attachment to his home world, but that doesn't mean that Spock doesn't have flaws. He just has them in different ways.
