Summary
Hiko Seijūrō was a young man who had a very low self-esteem. His mother, a high-ranked government official, died when he was a child and his father was a kind man who often got drunk. Hiko's father had been traveling abroad and was not at home when his mother died. Seijūrō's father was a gentle man who would often cry when remembering his wife. He would often give out food to the poor as well as make Hiko do menial tasks as an apology. He made Hiko study hard at school and told him that if he could not become a worthy person, he would be a burden to his family and could not be a part of it. Seijūrō became a very bright boy and a prodigy, but he had a low self-esteem throughout his life, feeling unworthy of any honors or recognition. Seijūrō's father died when he was young and he grew up with his mother's memory as his only source of pride.
