Pasteur was the son of a wine maker and he began to study science at the age of 12. Pasteur continued his studies of chemistry at the University of Paris, where he earned a Ph.D. in chemistry at the age of 24. While there, he continued to pursue his studies of microscopic organisms. He became interested in medicine and studied medicine in Nancy, France. There he perfected his knowledge of fermentation and discovered the process of pasteurization. He began to look for ways to prevent disease by using microorganisms that could not cause disease but were able to cure disease in another organism.
