The Gamera films, including the original and all subsequent films, were directed by Noriaki Yuasa and produced by Daiei Film. The original series was developed simultaneously with the films, and the films and television series were released simultaneously. The films were generally not well received by critics, and the television series was even less well received. The only thing the films and television series have in common is that they all star a heavily-accented Japanese actor named Takashi Shimura.
The Gamera films' plots have been wildly inconsistent. The films deal with the characters' struggle to survive against a monstrous monster (for example, against a giant bird that looks like a cross between an eagle and a vulture) that appears on Earth every couple of decades. In the first film, a man is killed after seeing Gamera's arrival, and Gamera's subsequent arrival is foreshadowed with a warning screen at the beginning of the film.

Gamera was created by the ancient civilization of Atlantis thousands of years ago in order to combat their previous creation, Gyaos. Gamera wiped out most of the Gyaos, but Atlantis was completely destroyed in the battle. Gamera was sealed within an atoll and remained dormant until 1995, when three Gyaos appeared in the skies over Japan. Gamera awakened from his long sleep and traveled to Japan to destroy his ancient enemy.
